Color mixing with Pipettes

Children learn by doing, and when it comes to learning about colors nothing is more enjoyable than creating the colors on your own. I cannot tell how many times I set up this work for my children. They are naturally drawn to the colored water and using the pipettes, which is a skill to master in itself. There have been times that I’ve read art books to my children before putting this work on the shelf and other times I just let them discover it on their own. This simple work yields rewards as soon as children mix two colors in the same bowl. Their eye light up when they discover they’ve made a “NEW” color.

 You’ll need

  • 2 or 3 small containers for colored water

  • 2 or 3 shallow containers for combining colors

  • Water

  • Food coloring – red, blue, yellow

  • Plastic pipettes

  • Sponge

It will help if children are familiar with using pipettes before they begin the color mixing work.
