Montessori at Home: CVC books

Once children know all of their sounds, (consonant sound and short vowel sounds) and have lengthy practice with the “I Spy” game, sandpaper letters, moveable alphabet, objects and picture work then they are reading to read short booklets. It is important to note that the child may have already begun reading words that they have written and words in other books. The purpose of the booklets is to isolate the words on a page without a picture for context. These booklets can be printed with red blue red lettering or with black lettering if children do not need the assistance of the coloring sequence.

Purpose: Read CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words without picture for context.

Materials: Small booklets with one CVC word on each page.

Offer a few books at a time, place them in a small basket, you can write the number of the booklet on the cover so and the children can keep count of which books they have read and reread.

These small booklets contain one word on each page however there are no pictures, this is so the child will focus on reading. These booklets can include any CVC words, not just nouns.  i.e. run, sit, jog
