Montessori at Home: reading sentences

Congratulations, after all that hard work it’s time to begin reading sentences. Your child has read and mastered so many CVC words. They’ve played “I Spy”, matched words and pictures and can identify the beginnings, middle and ending sound in their CVC words. They are ready for a new challenge. Pink sentences will contain mostly CVC words with the addition of a few sight words such as, the, an, a, and, this. If your child hasn’t practiced any sight words, high frequency words, no problem, now is the time to introduce the to a few.

Purpose: Read CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words and sight words in sentence form.

Materials: Pink sentence strips.

Invite children to read sentences composed of the words from the pink series and a few of the sight words that they have memorized.

Small oatmeal container wrapped in pink paper to store sentences.

Extension work

  1. Invite children to write their own sentences with the moveable alphabet.

  2. Invite children to read books that are phonetically written containing primarily CVC words, NOT GUIDED READING BOOKS!

Store sentences in an envelope.
