4 Pictures Books About Breastfeeding

Sharing a picture book with your baby or toddler is such a special way to connect and ignite their mind. It also releases oxytocin for you and exposes your little one to a variety of words and languages. Picture books are also a great way to normalize breastfeeding, celebrate diversity, and create connection. If you have a library card you can check out these books at no cost, you may even find a few that you would want to invest in and add to your child’s story.

Why Include Picture Books In Your Daily Rhythm ?

You may have realized by now that we are slightly obsessed with children’s books around here! Most of our blog posts include the titles of beloved stories and newly discovered books! In fact we have books in every single room of our home and it’s a common occurrence to find 50+ library books being flipped through on a regular basis at my sisters house!

The book list that I have put together are sweet stories that any mom and babe would enjoy. I think that these 5 picture books would be great to keep or give as a baby shower gift! Building these books into your rotation can create a lovely evening routine or get you through an early morning nursing session.

Picture books and board books last beyond the toddler years, we have kept so many books that were gifted to us, passed now, or that we’ve purchased over the years that have become family favorites. Many of the animal books that we have we now use in our homeschool lessons! Including breastfeeding images in children’s books provides a beautiful mirror image for them to take in and to see a connection between their own lives and the lives displayed on the pages.

You or your little may have a few favorite books, if you find that you are in a book rut, try and expand your bookshelves with new and fun pages. If you all your books are touch and feel style try a flap book or a puppet book. Right now our toddler is loving this Peter Rabbit puppet book! It doesn’t include any breastfeeding but it has beautiful illustrations and explores counting!

Introducing 4 Pictures Books That Feature Breastfeeding

  1. Mama Feeds Me All The Colors is a lovely book illustrated by Nathalie Beauvois. It is a beautiful collection of vibrant artwork created by a Venezuelan artist. This board book is perfect for toddlers who can turn the chunky pages as well as to share with your little one who is starting solids for the first time!

  2. Who In The World Likes To Nurse is a beautiful book written by Christie Henry that displays pictures of little ones breastfeeding around the globe.

  3. Mama, A World of Mothers and Motherhood is a lovely book that is new to me but has quickly become one of my favorite books and is at the top of my booklist for baby shower or new mom gifts! I also think it is so neat that the illustrations for this book were created before the concept of the book was even formed! It was written by Helene Delforge and illustrated by her brother in law Quentin Greban.

  4. Babies Don’t Eat Pizza this book is perfect to read to an older siblings who might have lots of questions about what babies do or don’t do! This book is diverse and even shows a family with twins—one twin is being breastfed while dad bottle feeds the other twin! I thought is was such a realistic scene and peak into everyday life with littles!

So there is my list, introducing you to 4 picture books featuring breastfeeding that you might not have known about, this list was curated and chosen carefully because of the diversity, beauty of artwork, the uplifting language, and the celebration of families! None of the books on the list are about any other mammals that breastfeed and the reason for that is I believe children should have as many books where they see themselves as possible. However, there are very many wonderful books showing the connection that all mammals share which is breastfeeding, maybe I will share those books next!
