I may be a day late on our “Things we love Tuesday” post but trust me, this post is worth reading! We spent the weekend at an amazing aquarium and Grayson and I could not get enough! If you missed our “Things We Love Tuesday” IGTV post click here. I share all about why I love Safari Ltd. Sharks and how we used them in our shark and seashell sensory play!

Over the weekend my family and I took our first road trip! We drove about 3 hours outside of Kansas City to the college town of Springfield, MO. Our main focus for the trip was the AMAZING Wonders of Wildlife Museum and Aquarium! This world class aquarium was beautiful, perfect for little kids and adults, and large enough that we were able to spend our entire day wandering through. I was so pleased by our trip to the aquarium that I wanted to continue learning about sea animals with my toddler. The most creative way I could think to introduce a new subject was through sensory play. My toddler is very busy and of course does not sit down in one place for long. So I needed something interactive and open ended. This led me towards our Safari Ltd. Sharks!

I first learned about Toobs from my sister (duh!) who has used them as educational tools for over a year! I was reluctant to purchase them at first, I honestly was not sure if my son would find small animals/objects very interesting. Eager to break out the shark toob that has been hanging out in our playroom, and after the weekend we had at the aquarium I knew now was the time!

Sensory Play Brought The Aquarium To Life At Home

Sensory play is great but it can require some preparation. Thankfully, I have a small container that stores our extra sensory supplies and a few toys. I pulled out our Safari Ltd. Shark Toob, sea shells and blue plastic shreds, to create a deep sea adventure. Excitedly I pulled out each shark from the Toob container. They looked so realistic and each shark is labeled…because who knows all of the gazillion types of sharks by name?!?

Our deep sea adventure was off to a great start! The shimmery plastic shreds and seashells really brought this activity full circle. As he removed an object we would talk about it…until he threw it across the room. Each seashell was different and he really enjoyed rubbing them to feel the different textures. I used about 4 out of the 10 sharks included in the toob for this activity. This allowed him to focus on the object of the activity which was to look, find, and extract sea objects from the water.

Although my toddler was more interested in throwing the plastic shreds in the air then hunting for deep sea creatures, we had an opportunity to try something new. I cannot wait to find more ways to play with our sharks! Maybe next time we will make oobleck water and create a beach using moon sand! Who knows! You will have to check back and see what we do next!
